How Does FibroScan Work?
FibroScan uses advanced ultrasound technology to measure liver stiffness and fatty changes. Our consultant Radiologist places A probe on the skin over the liver during the exam. Which , prob sends low-frequency energy pulses into the liver. By measuring the speed of wave , passes through the liver, the device calculates the liver’s stiffness and fat content. A faster wave indicates a stiffer liver, which correlates with more scarring or fibrosis.
Fibroscan typically measures two key values :
Liver Stiffness:
It Shows the level of fibrosis or scarring. The scan measures liver stiffness, which can indicate the amount of scarring present. High stiffness suggests significant scarring (fibrosis), which can lead to conditions like cirrhosis.
Fat Content:
It Shows how much fat is inside the liver. The test also estimates the amount of fat in the liver through a measurement called the Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP). A high CAP score indicates more fat.
Both scores help doctor understand your liver’s condition and determine whether your liver is healthy, fatty, inflamed, or showing signs of early fibrosis.
What happens during FibroScan ultrasound test
- Preparation: you need to fast at least four hours before the test, as eating can affect the results. Only water is allowed. No alcohol drinks at least 12 hours .
- Positioning: You will lie on your back, usually with your right arm raised above your head to allow the technician access to the liver area.
- Procedure: our consultant Radiologist places a probe on your skin, typically over the lower right rib cage. The probe sends sound waves into the liver and measures how quickly they return. This is repeated at least 10 times.
- Sensation: You may feel a gentle tapping or vibration, but the test is not painful.
- Duration: The scan itself takes about 15 minutes.
